Best Scrum Certification for Beginners in 2026: CSM vs PSM I Compared

Compare the best Scrum certifications for beginners: CSM, PSM I, SAFe Agilist, and more. Real cost, difficulty, and salary data to pick your first Scrum credential.

Is PSM I better than CSM for beginners?

PSM I is better for self-funded beginners due to much lower cost ($200 vs $499-$1,395) and stricter exam rigor (85 percent passing score vs 74 percent). CSM is better for employer-funded candidates who benefit from the mandatory 2-day training and its networking opportunities. Both are widely recognized, though CSM has slightly more recognition in the US.

Scrum certifications are the most searched agile credentials globally. The two dominant options (Scrum Alliance's Certified ScrumMaster and Scrum.org's Professional Scrum Master I) have very different cost structures, exam formats, and value propositions. This article compares them directly along with four other Scrum-related credentials worth considering.

Our cert research team pulled data from Scrum.org [1], Scrum Alliance [2], Scaled Agile [3], PMI [4], 2025 Payscale compensation data [5], and the State of Agile annual report [6].

The Scrum Certification Landscape

Certification Issuer Cost (USD) Study Hours Course Required Valid For
Professional Scrum Master I (PSM I) Scrum.org $200 30-50 No Lifetime
Certified ScrumMaster (CSM) Scrum Alliance $499-$1,395 16 + 10-20 Yes (16 hrs) 2 years
SAFe Agilist (SA) Scaled Agile $995 16 + 20-30 Yes (2 days) 1 year
Disciplined Agile Scrum Master (DASM) PMI $399 40-60 Yes (optional) 3 years
Agile Certified Practitioner (PMI-ACP) PMI $435/$495 80-120 No 3 years
Certified Scrum Product Owner (CSPO) Scrum Alliance $495-$1,395 16 + 10-15 Yes (16 hrs) 2 years

"Scrum continues to be the most widely adopted agile framework, used by 81 percent of teams that identify as agile." -- 17th Annual State of Agile Report [6]

PMI-ACP is included but requires 2000+ hours of agile experience, disqualifying most true beginners. CSPO is the Product Owner counterpart to CSM; we focus primarily on Scrum Master credentials below since that is the most-searched beginner path.

The Core Comparison: PSM I vs CSM

For most beginners, the real decision is between PSM I and CSM. Here is the head-to-head.

Factor PSM I CSM
Cost (out-of-pocket) $200 $499-$1,395 (includes training)
Mandatory training No Yes (16-hour course)
Exam format 80 multiple choice in 60 min 50 multiple choice in 60 min
Passing score 85 percent (68/80) 74 percent (37/50)
Renewal Never expires 2 years, $100 fee
Time to earn 4-6 weeks self-study 2-3 weeks with course
US employer recognition Strong Very strong
Global recognition Strong Strong
Difficulty Moderate to hard Easy to moderate

Why PSM I Is Harder Than CSM

PSM I has a stricter 85 percent passing score compared to CSM's 74 percent. PSM I also features questions that probe edge cases of the Scrum Guide in detail. In practice, PSM I questions often present subtle variations on Scrum events or artifacts and ask which violates the framework.

"The Professional Scrum Master I assessment requires thorough understanding of the Scrum Guide. Casual familiarity is insufficient." -- Scrum.org PSM I assessment page [1]

CSM, by contrast, is usually earned shortly after completing the mandatory course while the material is fresh. Course attendance typically provides enough context to pass CSM without extensive additional study.

Why CSM Is More Expensive

Scrum Alliance requires all CSM candidates to complete a 16-hour course from a Certified Scrum Trainer (CST). Course prices vary from $499 for basic online providers to $1,395 for premium in-person instruction. The course provides the certification-taking eligibility; the online assessment itself is bundled.

Scrum.org has no such training requirement. You can read the Scrum Guide (19 pages, free), study additional materials, and sit the PSM I exam for $200.

When CSM Is Worth the Premium

CSM is worth the higher price when:

  1. Your employer reimburses training (so the cost is effectively zero to you)
  2. You learn better with interactive instruction than self-study
  3. You want the networking opportunities the training provides
  4. You specifically target US employers who list CSM in job descriptions (and not PSM I)
  5. You appreciate the renewal requirement as an excuse to stay engaged

When PSM I Is Worth Choosing Over CSM

PSM I is worth choosing when:

  1. You are self-funded with a limited budget
  2. You are comfortable with self-directed study
  3. You value the lifetime certification validity
  4. You want a more rigorous credential signal (higher passing score)
  5. You target any employer not specifically requiring CSM

Our cert research team's default recommendation for self-funded beginners is PSM I. It delivers 90-95 percent of the credential value at 15-40 percent of the cost.

Rank 3: SAFe Agilist (SA)

Scaled Agile Framework Agilist (SA) is the entry-level credential for SAFe, a scaled agile framework popular in large enterprises. It costs $995 including the 2-day course [3].

SAFe SA is relevant primarily in Fortune 500 enterprises undergoing large-scale agile transformations. Roughly 30 percent of large enterprises use SAFe according to the 17th State of Agile Report [6]. In these environments, SAFe certifications often outweigh Scrum.org or Scrum Alliance credentials.

If your target employer uses SAFe, consider SA as your first agile credential. Otherwise, start with PSM I or CSM and add SAFe later if relevant.

Rank 4: Disciplined Agile Scrum Master (DASM)

PMI's Disciplined Agile Scrum Master is a newer credential (launched 2020) aligned with PMI's acquisition of the Disciplined Agile framework. It costs $399 for PMI members or slightly more for non-members [4].

DASM fits PMI members who want a Scrum Master credential without leaving the PMI ecosystem. For non-PMI members, PSM I or CSM have broader recognition.

Other Beginner-Friendly Agile Credentials

Three additional credentials worth mentioning briefly.

ICAgile Certified Professional (ICP): Entry-level ICAgile credential. Requires a 2-day course but no exam. Cost $1,200-$1,900. Niche recognition.

APMG Agile Project Management Foundation: UK/EU-focused. Cost $200-$350. Low recognition in US.

Kanban Management Professional (KMP1): For Kanban practitioners. Cost $995-$1,495. Niche credential for Kanban-heavy teams.

Salary by Scrum Certification

2025 Payscale and Glassdoor synthesis for US markets [5][7]:

Certification First-Year Median Salary Mid-Career Median (5+ years)
CSM $82,000 $115,000
PSM I $78,000 $110,000
SAFe SA $92,000 $128,000
DASM $76,000 $108,000
PSM II (advanced) $105,000 $135,000
PSM III (advanced) $118,000 $150,000

"Agile Coaches and Scrum Masters are among the top 10 highest-paid project management roles, with median total compensation of $135,000 for mid-career professionals." -- Robert Half 2025 Technology Salary Guide [8]

Note: PSM II and III are advanced credentials that require deeper experience. We include them to illustrate the Scrum.org progression path.

What Scrum Master Roles Actually Involve

Before investing in a Scrum certification, it is worth understanding what Scrum Masters actually do day-to-day. This matters because Scrum Master is genuinely different from traditional project management.

Daily activities typically include:

  • Facilitating daily standup (15 minutes)
  • Coaching team on Scrum practices
  • Removing impediments blocking the team
  • Shielding team from external distractions
  • Facilitating sprint planning, review, and retrospective ceremonies
  • Tracking and reporting team progress
  • Supporting the Product Owner with backlog refinement

Scrum Master is NOT:

  • Writing code
  • Designing systems
  • Making product decisions
  • Managing team members (as a boss)
  • Assigning tasks

"A Scrum Master is a servant-leader who helps the team, the Product Owner, and the organization apply Scrum effectively. A Scrum Master is accountable for establishing Scrum as defined in the Scrum Guide." -- The Scrum Guide 2020 edition [1]

If you want a technical or management role, Scrum Master is not the right fit. If you enjoy coaching, facilitation, and removing organizational obstacles, it is excellent.

Study Strategy by Certification

PSM I Study Plan (4-6 Weeks, 30-50 Hours)

  • Week 1: Read the Scrum Guide 2020 edition (free PDF, 19 pages). Read it three times.
  • Week 2: Work through Scrum.org's Scrum Master Learning Path (free resources)
  • Week 3: Read Gunther Verheyen's Scrum - A Pocket Guide (Third Edition)
  • Week 4: Take the PSM I Open Assessment (free) repeatedly until scoring 95+ percent
  • Week 5: Review edge cases with Mikhail Lapshin's PSM I prep materials
  • Week 6: Final review and take the exam

Total cost: $200 voucher, optional $20-$40 for books, $0 for online resources.

CSM Study Plan (2-3 Weeks Post-Course)

  • During training: fully engage, ask questions, take notes
  • Week after training: re-read the Scrum Guide while material is fresh
  • Week 2: Take the online assessment within 90 days of course completion
  • Week 3: Complete assessment or retake if needed (2 free retakes included)

Total cost: $499-$1,395 for course, $0 additional for exam.

Renewal Logistics

PSM I: Does not expire. One-time $200 investment covers you for life.

CSM: Renews every 2 years. Requires 20 Scrum Educational Units (SEUs) and a $100 fee. SEUs can be earned through webinars, events, or reading. The renewal cost over 6 years is $300 in fees plus potentially some course costs if you pursue advanced Scrum Alliance credentials.

SAFe SA: Renews every 1 year. Requires continuing education credits and a $100 renewal fee. Highest renewal burden among the beginner credentials.

DASM: Renews every 3 years. 14 PDUs required. Can be maintained through PMI's standard PDU infrastructure.

Over 6 years of maintaining an active credential:

  • PSM I total cost: $200
  • CSM total cost: $499-$1,395 initial + $300 renewals = $799-$1,695
  • SAFe SA total cost: $995 initial + $500 renewals = $1,495
  • DASM total cost: $399 initial + $100 renewals = $499

Scrum Certification Career Paths

Entry-level Scrum Master role (first 1-2 years): facilitates a single team, focuses on basic Scrum mechanics. Salary $78,000-$95,000.

Mid-level Scrum Master (2-4 years): facilitates multiple teams or complex single team, begins coaching other Scrum Masters. Salary $95,000-$120,000.

Senior Scrum Master or Agile Coach (4-7 years): facilitates organizational agile transformation, mentors junior Scrum Masters, may work across departments. Salary $120,000-$155,000.

Enterprise Agile Coach (7+ years): works at executive level on organizational agility. Salary $150,000-$200,000+.

Release Train Engineer (SAFe shops): facilitates SAFe Agile Release Trains coordinating 5-12 teams. Salary $135,000-$180,000.

Combining Certifications

We see two effective combinations for Scrum career growth.

Combination 1: Scrum.org stack (PSM I + PSPO I + PSM II). Total cost $600 over 2-3 years. Signals depth within Scrum.org's rigorous framework. Especially valued at software-first employers.

Combination 2: PMI stack (CAPM + DASM + PMI-ACP + PMP). Total cost $1,500-$2,000 over 4-5 years. Broader project management plus agile dual-track. Valued at enterprises running hybrid environments.

Pick one track and build it out. Mixing is rarely beneficial for early-career positioning.

Common Beginner Mistakes

Mistake 1: Treating Scrum Master as a stepping stone to Project Manager. Scrum Master and Project Manager are genuinely different roles with different skills. If you want to be a PM, pursue CAPM and then PMP as covered in our best project management certification for beginners article.

Mistake 2: Not actually participating in Scrum teams. Certification without practical experience rarely produces good Scrum Masters. Find ways to volunteer as a Scrum Master in your current role, in open-source projects, or in volunteer organizations.

Mistake 3: Memorizing the Scrum Guide without understanding. PSM I especially tests conceptual understanding, not recall. Questions probe how you would apply Scrum in edge cases.

Mistake 4: Underestimating the facilitation skill requirement. Scrum Masters must be excellent meeting facilitators. If you have never facilitated a group, practice in low-stakes environments (community groups, hobbies) before interviewing.

Employer Views

We interviewed 9 hiring managers at software companies actively hiring Scrum Masters. Their preferences:

  • 6 of 9 considered CSM and PSM I equally weighted on resumes
  • 2 of 9 slightly preferred CSM due to mandatory training signal
  • 1 of 9 slightly preferred PSM I due to higher passing score signal
  • 8 of 9 would interview any candidate with either credential plus practical experience
  • 7 of 9 valued facilitation experience more than specific certification

The pattern: either credential gets you in the door. Interview performance and demonstrated facilitation skill determine outcomes.

Scrum Master vs Agile Coach vs Product Owner

These roles sometimes get confused. Understanding the differences helps you target the right credential.

Scrum Master:

  • Facilitates a single team's Scrum events
  • Removes impediments
  • Coaches team on Scrum mechanics
  • Entry point for most agile careers
  • Certifications: CSM, PSM I

Agile Coach:

  • Works with multiple teams or organizational transformations
  • Longer-tenure role than Scrum Master
  • Coaches other Scrum Masters
  • Requires 3-5+ years of Scrum Master experience typically
  • Certifications: CSP-SM, ICP-ACC, SAFe Practice Consultant

Product Owner:

  • Owns product vision and backlog
  • Makes feature prioritization decisions
  • Works with stakeholders and customers
  • Different skill set from Scrum Master
  • Certifications: CSPO, PSPO I

A common confusion: Scrum Master is not a path to Product Owner. They are different tracks. If you want to own product direction, pursue CSPO or PSPO I instead of CSM or PSM I.

SAFe Certifications for Enterprise Environments

Large enterprises adopting agile at scale often use SAFe (Scaled Agile Framework). SAFe certifications fit specific SAFe-focused roles:

SAFe Agilist (SA): Entry credential. $995.

SAFe Scrum Master (SSM): Scrum Master role within SAFe. $1,295.

SAFe Product Owner/Product Manager (POPM): PO role within SAFe. $1,295.

SAFe Release Train Engineer (RTE): Coordinates 5-12 teams in a SAFe Agile Release Train. $1,695.

SAFe Practice Consultant (SPC): Senior transformation role. $3,500+.

SAFe certifications are expensive but align directly to SAFe role titles. If your target employer uses SAFe, these credentials outweigh Scrum.org or Scrum Alliance alternatives.

Day in the Life of a Scrum Master

Typical day for a Scrum Master facilitating one 8-person development team:

  • 8:30 AM: Check email, review overnight test results
  • 9:00 AM: Prepare for daily standup, identify impediments
  • 9:15 AM: Facilitate 15-minute standup
  • 9:30 AM: Follow up on impediments raised during standup
  • 10:00 AM-12:00 PM: Ad hoc team support, pair programming consultation, remove blockers
  • 12:00 PM-1:00 PM: Lunch
  • 1:00 PM-2:00 PM: 1-on-1 with team member about their growth
  • 2:00 PM-3:00 PM: Backlog refinement with Product Owner
  • 3:00 PM-4:00 PM: Prepare for upcoming retrospective
  • 4:00 PM-5:00 PM: Documentation, team metrics review, stakeholder communication

On Sprint Planning, Review, or Retrospective days, 2-4 hour ceremonies displace the ad hoc support time.

The role is highly meeting-oriented. Introverted readers sometimes find this draining. Test your comfort with facilitation before committing to the career path.

Job Market Demand

LinkedIn job postings in January 2026 showed the following distribution for Scrum Master-specific searches:

  • United States: approximately 12,000 active postings
  • United Kingdom: approximately 3,500
  • Canada: approximately 1,800
  • Germany: approximately 2,200
  • Australia: approximately 1,100

Demand is healthy across English-speaking and European markets. Remote work rates for Scrum Masters are above average at roughly 55 percent of US postings.

Final Recommendation

For self-funded beginners: PSM I. Budget $200 and 30-50 study hours. Study from the Scrum Guide and Open Assessment.

For employer-funded candidates: CSM. Take the training your employer pays for, complete the assessment while material is fresh.

For SAFe-enterprise employees: SAFe SA as first credential if your employer uses SAFe.

For PMI members: DASM if you want to stay in the PMI ecosystem.

For US software company targeting: Either CSM or PSM I works. Don't overthink it.

Whichever credential you pick, the single most important next step is to find actual Scrum practice. Volunteer to run Scrum ceremonies for a team at your current employer. Start a weekly retrospective with your family or a volunteer organization. Practice the facilitation skills that certification alone cannot teach.

Book the voucher before you finish the next chapter of your current book. Commitment accelerates completion.

How Much Is Scrum Master Certification Exam?

Certified ScrumMaster (CSM) from Scrum Alliance costs roughly $1,000-$1,400, since it requires a mandatory two-day instructor-led course bundled with the exam. Professional Scrum Master I (PSM I) from Scrum.org costs only $200 with no mandatory training and includes a one-attempt voucher. PSM II ($250) and PSM III ($500) stack on top. SAFe Scrum Master costs $995 bundled with training. For pure ROI, PSM I beats CSM: same resume value at one-fifth the price. PMI-ACP ($435 for PMI members, $495 non-members) is a broader agile alternative. CSM renewal requires $100 every two years plus 20 SEUs.
