The Top of the Storage Track

HP’s ExpertONE program had a clear hierarchy, and HP0-J67 sat at the top of the storage side of it.

ATP was the implementation tier. The storage entry point, HP0-J73 (Foundations of HP Storage Solutions), asked for six months of storage experience and validated that you could contribute to design, deployment and management.

The multi-site qualifier is the whole point of this exam, and it is worth being concrete about why that is harder than single-site design.

Replication topology. Synchronous replication keeps a second copy perfectly current but imposes a latency penalty that grows with distance, which puts a hard ceiling on how far apart your sites can be. Asynchronous replication removes that constraint but accepts data loss measured by replication lag. Choosing between them, or designing a tiered arrangement using both, is an architectural decision with direct business consequences.

Recovery objectives. RPO, how much data you can afford to lose, and RTO, how long you can afford to be down, are business requirements that translate directly into storage architecture. A multi-site architect’s job is largely translating between those two languages.

Failover behaviour and split-brain. What happens when the link between sites fails but both sites remain up is one of the genuinely hard problems in distributed storage. Designing quorum and witness arrangements to avoid two sites both believing they are authoritative is core multi-site work.

Distance, bandwidth and cost. Every multi-site design is constrained by what the inter-site link can carry and what it costs, which is why these designs are always compromises rather than ideal solutions.

None of that is HP-specific. It is the durable substance of the credential.

What This Credential Is Worth Today

As a current certification, nothing. It is retired and cannot be verified as active. HPE does not publish a consolidated retired-exams list with dates and replacements, so no authoritative retirement date exists for this specific exam.

As evidence of senior design capability, this is the strongest of the retired HP storage credentials, because Master ASE was the expert tier and multi-site architecture is genuinely difficult work. If you hold this, you were designing disaster recovery and business continuity for organisations that cared enough to pay for it.

What transferred, essentially intact: the architectural reasoning. RPO and RTO analysis, synchronous versus asynchronous trade-offs, quorum and witness design, and the discipline of designing for the failure case rather than the happy path are all vendor-neutral and all still current. Cloud providers solved these problems with different vocabulary, but the constraints are physics and the trade-offs are unchanged. Someone who genuinely understood multi-site storage design understands multi-region cloud architecture faster than someone starting fresh.

What did not transfer: the product specifics and the operational model. HP’s storage portfolio went to Hewlett Packard Enterprise in the 1 November 2015 company split and changed considerably afterward. More significantly, a large share of the disaster recovery workload that once required this kind of bespoke multi-site array design now runs on cloud replication and managed database services, where the vendor implements the topology and the architect selects a configuration.

That shift reduced the number of people who need to design multi-site storage from first principles. It did not eliminate the need to understand what those configurations are doing, which is why the reasoning still has value even where the implementation has moved.

How to list it. Name the tier explicitly, because Master ASE was HP’s expert level and that is worth stating: “HP Master ASE - Storage Solutions Architect V1 (exam HP0-J67), retired.” Then, more usefully, describe the actual designs: the recovery objectives you designed to, the topologies you implemented, and the scale. For a senior credential like this, the work itself is the evidence and the certification is the corroboration.

Where This Expertise Leads Now

Multi-region cloud architecture is the most direct continuation. The questions are identical: how far apart, synchronous or asynchronous, what happens during a partition, what recovery objectives can you actually promise. The answers are configured rather than engineered, but choosing correctly still requires the same understanding.

Business continuity and disaster recovery as a discipline remains a specialism in its own right, and it has become more prominent as ransomware recovery has moved from an IT concern to a board-level one. Immutable backups and isolated recovery environments are newer requirements layered onto the same recovery-objective framework this exam tested.

If you remain in HPE storage environments, HPE’s current tracks are the natural continuation, though no credit carries over. Verify current requirements directly with HPE, since its certification pages are generated dynamically and change.

The one thing I would not recommend is treating recertification as the priority. At this level, demonstrated design work is worth more than a current credential, and the underlying expertise is transferable enough that a cloud architecture certification will usually open more doors than a hardware-specific one.
