How to Prepare

The PMP requires both experience and exam mastery. Use this four-step approach to cover both.

01

Verify Your Eligibility Before Applying

PMP requires a 4-year degree plus 36 months of project leadership experience, or a high school diploma plus 60 months. You also need 35 hours of formal PM education. Audit your experience documentation before applying — PMI does verify it.

02

Complete an Accredited 35-Hour PM Course

The 35 contact hours of PM education are mandatory. Use a PMI Authorized Training Partner (ATP) course or reputable online provider. The course also introduces you to the PMBOK Guide and Agile Practice Guide content you will be tested on.

03

Study the Exam Content Outline, Not Just PMBOK

The current PMP exam is based on the Exam Content Outline (ECO), not the PMBOK Guide alone. Roughly half the exam covers predictive approaches and half covers agile or hybrid delivery. Study both — candidates who study only PMBOK underperform on agile questions.

04

Take Practice Exams and Apply for the Real One

After approval, you have one year and up to three attempts. Take full-length practice exams of 180 questions under timed conditions. Score 75% or higher consistently before booking. PMP exams are proctored through Pearson VUE.
